Winter is not far off, and now is the time to get your home ready for the cold season. For most of us, that means scheduling heating maintenance. For some of us, though, it will mean replacing our heating systems. If your furnace is nearing the end of its life, it’s better to get it replaced now rather than have it break down in the middle of the coldest months of the year. Read on for some of the signs to watch for that will warn you that your furnace needs to be replaced this fall.
Extensive Repairs
Years of normal use will start to wear down the various parts of the furnace, eventually causing them to fail. Since each part of the system wears down at a slightly different rate, one of the signs that your furnace is coming near the end of its life is if multiple parts fail all at once. At that point, it will very likely be cheaper just to replace your furnace rather than to keep repairing it all winter long.
Efficiency Drops
The same wear and tear that makes repairs more commonplace will also lead to a steady decline in energy efficiency. This will mean two things. First, your furnace will not be able to provide the level of output that you are used to. Second, your monthly bills will be higher due to the increased time the furnace has to work to accomplish the same temperature changes. If you notice this happening, it is a good time to replace your furnace. Even if you haven’t had any major breakdowns yet, it is only a matter of time.
