If you’re relying on a ductless system to keep warm this winter, you should keep an eye out for any issues that may crop up with it. One of the most common reasons that people call for repairs during the winter is that their system simply isn’t heating anymore. There are a number of reasons why this might be happening. Let’s take a look at a couple of reasons why your ductless system may not be heating properly.
Refrigerant is a vital part of proper ductless operation, just like any other heat pump. Rather than burning fuel to generate heat, the system evaporates and condenses refrigerant to move heat from one place to the other. The less refrigerant is available for the system, the less heat it will be able to vent into the home. If a leak develops in the refrigerant line, it will slowly drain the system of refrigerant. This will cause a drop in output, followed by multiple malfunctions and an eventual breakdown. Call for repairs if you notice fluid dripping from your system.
Reversing Valve Issues
The reversing valve is the part of the ductless system that allows it to offer both heating and cooling services. It does this by enabling the system to change the direction that refrigerant flows through it. If the reversing valve malfunctions, though, the system can become stuck in one mode or another. This tends to happen either because the slide in the valve becomes stuck, or because the solenoid that controls it loses its charge. The valve will need to be repaired before the system can be returned to its normal operation. Call for repairs if your system appears to be stuck in cooling mode.
