What Is Ductless Air Conditioning?
A ductless air conditioner is very similar to a central air conditioner, except that it doesn’t use ducts to circulate air output. The air handler is installed on the wall or ceiling of the room, where it evaporates refrigerant to siphon heat from the air. The thermal energy is sent to an outside unit, where it is vented out of the house. Up to four indoor air handlers can be attached to a single outdoor unit.

The primary benefit of using ductless air conditioning is that it bypasses ducts entirely. Duct leaks are responsible for up to 30% losses in output, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. So ductless air conditioners are actually much more energy efficient than centralized air conditioners.
They also happen to offer much finer control over indoor climate. Each air handler has its own thermostat, which allows each room to set its own ideal temperatures. Central air conditioning, on the other hand, can only condition all of the house or none of it.
