Why Air Conditioner Size is so Important

If you are looking to install a new air conditioner, you need to make sure that it’s properly sized for your home. You can’t just stick any system in your home that physically fits and expect it to operate just as well as any other. Installing a system that isn’t sized properly can cause all sorts of different problems down the line. Read on to find out why it’s so important that you install the correct air conditioner size for your home.

Oversized

Every air conditioner is designed to generate a certain amount of output over a certain amount of time. This is called the air conditioner’s cycle. If you install an air conditioner that’s too large, it will generate so much output that the thermostat will shut it down before it has had a chance to complete its full cycle. Short cycling puts the air conditioner under far more stress than it was meant to handle, leading to more frequent problems and shortening the system’s lifespan considerably. Short cycling also makes the air conditioner far less efficient, which results in your home being less comfortable.

Undersized

An undersized air conditioner is too small to properly cool the home in the course of one cycle. So, the system ends up operating for far longer than it’s supposed to in an attempt to compensate for its insufficient output. This has the same end result as if the system were oversized: the amount of strain on the system will increase significantly. Less efficiency, more problems, shorter lifespan, etc. are all similar to oversized air conditioners. Consult with a professional to make sure your air conditioner is properly sized.
