The Benefits of Installing More Energy Efficient Windows

wood-windowEveryone wants their homes to be as energy efficient as possible. More energy efficiency means cheaper operating costs, after all. How you improve your home’s energy efficiency matters, however, and not all improvements need to be big investments to be effective. For example, installing new windows can actually save you a lot of money on your annual home operating costs. Find out how below.

Leakage

Climate control and insulation both play a big part in how energy efficient your home is. If your home has air leaks all over the place, it will be harder for your heater or air conditioner to maintain a set temperature indoors. This leads to the system having to work harder, which leads to more money spent on an annual basis. If you want to make your home more energy efficient, it’s a good idea to start by sealing up these small leaks that are contributing to your overall energy costs.

Now, a leak doesn’t have to be large or obvious in order to have a large impact on the energy efficiency of your home. The most common areas that have problematic leaks include the area around the front door, the attic, and the windows. Minor gaps between the window itself and the frame can certainly contribute to energy loss. The actual construction of the window can’t be discounted either, however. By installing new, energy efficient windows throughout your house, you can actually significantly cut down on the amount of air leaking out of your home.

Noise

Modern energy efficient windows have more to offer than just protection from air leaks, though. Noise pollution is a really common problem for millions of homes across the country. You don’t have to have constant construction taking place across the street, or a helicopter flying overhead, in order to find constant noise from outside annoying. If you are having trouble keeping peace and quiet in your home due to the infiltration of constant noise from outside, new windows could be just the solution.

Windows often serve as the points where sound waves have the easiest time entering a home. They’re a lot thinner than the walls, after all. More advanced windows are designed to help insulate the home in multiple ways, however, including against sound.

Climate

In addition to lightening the load on your climate control systems, and keeping your home quieter, energy efficient windows can actually independently help to keep you comfortable. Homes with rooms that receive a lot of sunlight exposure might seem more bright and cheerful, but that can mean a corresponding and uncomfortable rise in indoor temperatures. This can be especially troublesome during the summer. Energy efficient windows hinder the transmission of radiant energy into the home, helping to keep it cooler during the summer months.
