Summer is almost here, and your air conditioner is going to start seeing a lot more use than it has in the past few months. The last thing you want is for your air conditioner to give out right in the middle of a hot summer day. Proper repairs and maintenance can prevent that from happening for a time, but there will come a point where your system just won’t be able to make it through another summer. When that happens, you’re going to want to replace it before it has the chance to break down on you. With that in mind, here are 3 signs that your air conditioner needs replacing.
Age
Air conditioning systems are typically designed to last between 15 and 20 years. That doesn’t mean that there aren’t exceptions to that, but it tends to be a pretty accurate time frame for the majority of air conditioners. If your air conditioner falls within that range, you should start keeping an eye out for any additional indications that it’s on its proverbial last legs.
Rising Electric Bills
The natural wear and tear that accompanies years of regular use will eventually result in slow decline in system efficiency. This decline will cause the air conditioner to have to operate for longer to achieve the same results, which will cause your monthly bills to increase. Rising electric bills are a common indication that your system is nearing the end of its life.
Frequent Repairs
When the wear on your system becomes severe enough, various parts inside it will start to give out. This commonly manifests in a rapid cascade of repair needs as each part fails after the other. A healthy air conditioner should not need repairs more than once or twice a year at most. If you need to have your air conditioner repaired every few months, you should probably just replace it.
